How Builders Benefit from Philanthropy

It’s our daily business to improve the lives of our homebuyers – and indeed we do! So how can we extend our positive impact to the neighborhoods around our developments to leave a lasting impact on Washington?

EYA Co-Founder and President Bob Youngentob chats with a DC public school elementary student during EYA’s Buff-And-Scrub event at Drew Elementary School.

Philanthropy serves so many more than the recipients of your giving and volunteerism.

  • Employees feel a greater sense of pride, commitment and engagement when involved in giving back.
  • Volunteer activities provide team building and an opportunity for mid- and lower-level staff to take on leadership roles in the planning and delivery of events.
  • Community leaders and stakeholders have a real opportunity to get to know your homebuilding organization as more than a company – your company is really just a group of passionate individuals who care about the community – and homebuilding is what you do.
  • Home shoppers and home owners will be delighted to know that part of their purchase price helped a needy person or organization – and they may even volunteer alongside you.
  • Subcontractor partners and consultants are eager to give back with you. Volunteer events are great networking opportunities for them.

EYA’s Buff-and-Scrub event at Drew Elementary School included a visit from the District Fire Department who so kindly helped EYA hang this beautiful new flag.

Local homebuilder and developer EYA established the EYA Foundation with a mission of giving back in the neighborhoods they serve. Their employees have donated backpacks with school supplies to underprivileged youth, participated in beautification events at DC schools, and renovated the Carpenter’s Shelter which serves the homeless in Alexandria. JBG, another prominent developer, created JBG Cares, whose mission it is to provide affordable housing, facilitate education, donate food to those in need, and enrich communities through art. The company takes advantage of the wide skills and interests of its employees by working year-round to match employees’ interests with volunteer opportunities.

The Northern Virginia Building Industry Association makes its contribution through the sponsorship of HomeAid Northern Virginia, an organization that renovates shelters for homeless families at no cost. Most recently, HANV finished a renovation and expansion of The Alternative House, a teen shelter that serves about 200 teens per year. The project has made a significant impact on the day-to-day life of staff in the shelter.

Women Giving Back is another HomeAid program that provides free clothing to women and children in Northern Virginia homeless shelters. These women need proper clothing to go to work and attend school, and thus depend on companies like NVBIA to fund these efforts.

Finally, local chapters of Rebuilding      Together work with corporate partners, like the National Association of Home Builders, to repair and upgrade low-income homes and community centers at no cost to the clients. The organization brings together 200,000 volunteers nationally, and completes about 10,000 projects every year, playing a significant role in stabilizing vulnerable neighborhoods nation-wide.

Finding organizations in need around your new home communities is easy and we’re certain your employees, partners, homebuyers and stakeholders will find your philanthropy valuable and rewarding.

About EYA:

EYA is a smart growth developer specializing in walkable new townhome, condominium and mixed-use developments.  Since its founding in 1992, the company has built over 30 neighborhoods in the Washington Metropolitan area.  EYA is currently selling four new home communities: Chancellor’s Row in Washington, DC; The Oronoco Waterfront Residences and Old Town Commons in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia; Mosaic District in Fairfax, Virginia; with a fifth, Little Falls Place in Bethesda, Maryland, coming in 2013. For more information on the company or its neighborhoods, visit http://www.eya.com/. Follow EYA on Facebook and Twitter.

JBG Cares: GALA Member Gives Back with Volunteer Programs

In this post we’re highlighting an ambitious and admirable program by a GALA member The JBG Companies. JBG Cares, the corporate giving and volunteer arm of the local investment and development firm, works to support the communities where JBG works. JBG Cares supports community programs that provide affordable housing, offer educational services, respect the environment, provide food for those in need, and/or advance the local arts.

Contributions come in the form of monetary and in-kind donations – both corporate and through individuals – as well as volunteer hours through JBG’s annual “Days of Giving” campaign. An integral part of JBG Gives Back, Days of Giving is a three-month initiative that provides JBG employees paid time off to volunteer for nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity, Capital Area Food Bank and Food and Friends. The program provided 1,600 volunteer hours this year alone, with over 400 employees participating annually and 90 percent company participation.

JBG believes its employees gain as much from the experience of giving back as the charities—and their clients—do. Many of its team members also serve on the boards of local charities and nonprofit organizations, underscoring the “give back” culture that has been a part of JBG since its founding in 1960.

“Giving back to communities is a founding philosophy of JBG. Days of Giving is about not only to helping communities, but also inspiring our team,” said Matt Blocher, JBG Senior Vice President. “We believe we get as much out of the experience of volunteering as the worthy organizations we help, making this community building at its best.”

GALA encourages its members to be active, positive parts of the communities in which they work. If you’d like to share your company’s “give back” story on this blog, please contact us!

Branding in the Digital Age

When meeting with clients about their businesses, products and services, we often ask the question, “How does the world find and consume information about you or your brand?” It’s a simple question. And, there is a simple answer that universally applies to all individuals and businesses: the Google search bar. Think about it. You hear about a business from a friend or you meet someone interesting at an event and you want to find out more. What do you do? Chances are, you turn to your computer or smart phone and Google them or their business.

The information that Google provides on the first page of the search results is the information that will define you or your brand. Whether positive or negative, a judgment will be made based on this information.

Accordingly, the strategies we create and implement for our clients are based around these five best practices for “Branding in the Digital Age:”

1. Google Yourself or Your Company – Take an audit of what information is currently being presented. Is the information and content in the search results correct? Is it the same information that you would tell a person about you or your company if you were meeting in person?

2. Design an Effective Channel of Communication – Where are your customers or business partners communicating online? If you are a B2B business, it might be LinkedIn. If you are B2C, it might be Facebook and Twitter. You also need to determine which channels of communication are right for you. Which social media channels are you able to manage to maintain a steady follow of communication?

3. Have a Mission and Purpose: Establish what you want to communicate, when and why? All content should be directly related to your business objectives and timed accordingly to allow for a steady flow of communication.

4. Establish Style Guidelines: Do you want to be formal or informal? Funny or serious? Your social media voice should match your company’s brand.

5. Stay Active and Engaged – Once you establish your lines of communication, you need to stay active. It is not enough to simply set up social media accounts; you need to be publishing interesting content on a regular and steady basis. The volume of information is not as important as the consistency.

The exciting news is that you have an unprecedented opportunity to create and publish information in the online environment to create and define your brand. Never before have we had the control and accessibility that we now have at our fingertips. This is why Delucchi Plus and Blue Bug Digital work closely with our clients to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their digital reputation using social media, web design, search engine optimization and more.

A Time To Celebrate!

Thank you to NDG Communications for joining the fun and guest blogging! If YOU would like to share your own industry wisdom, email: gala@delucchiplus.com

As residential home design, sales, and marketing professionals, we are not creating artwork that will be viewed and appreciated by thousands. Or are we?

Each day in our world we talk at length about new homes—how to design, market and sell them. We design and merchandise homes that anticipate and exceed homebuyers’ needs and develop creative ways to market them by connecting emotionally with potential buyers online and off. While our “art” may never hang on the wall at a museum, it does use human creative skill and imagination; it is often quite beautiful; and our work has the power to drive people to act—to visit a website or sales center, to not only find a place to live, but a home.

The Great American Living Awards (GALA) is our opportunity to recognize and celebrate the artist in each of us, and the creativity and imagination that goes into the work we do every day, driving us to be the best of the best at what we do. Cheers to a job well done!

GALA Gives Results

By James McDonald, James McDonald Associates Architects, PC

With the ceremony just a week away, we are getting excited for this year’s GALA celebration. For those first timers, what can you expect after the big evening? For starters, your involvement in GALA will act as advertising to existing and future clients at the ceremony. In addition, post-event coverage will act as advertising for future clients not in attendance at the event.

After attending this year’s GALA ceremony you’ll have a better perception of how your designs/marketing/ideas are perceived by the market and your peers. Doesn’t everyone really want to know where they stand amongst the competition?

Above all, attending GALA will connect you with the local industry and community and you will make lasting connections that will prove invaluable.

Have you bought your tickets yet? Don’t miss out, purchase now! And don’t forget to follow GALA on Facebook for news and updates.

See you on the 20th!
